From Bayeux to Vire

The Pré-Bocage is an ideal departure point to visit numerous places of interest in Normandy. These are some of them :

BAYEUX

A city with a medieval flavour, Bayeux has managed to conserve a very rich architectural heritage – dating from the Middle Ages to modern times – it wasn’t destroyed by the Second World War bombings. Along the main shopping street (typical architecture of the Middle Ages), and in the adjacent streets, take a stroll and discover half-timbered houses from the 14th and 15th centuries, and elegant houses and buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Immerse yourself in the history of the Cathedral, built in the Middle Ages and combining Roman and Gothic architecture. Re-live the conquest of England by William the Conqueror in 1066, at the Bayeux Tapestry, a 70 metre-long piece of embroidery.

Although the city didn’t suffer much on D-Day, fierce fighting took place in the whole region of the Bessin and on the beaches, only 15 km away.

The Normandy Battle Memorial Museum is a reminder of the significant events that took place in June 1944, with exhibits of various equipment from this period and images from archives…

On the opposite side of the road is the British War Cemetery that contains the tombs of more than 4000 soldiers from the Commonwealth killed during the Second World War.

VIRE

In the heart of the Bocage Virois, Vire, (the second main town in Calvados), becomes the symbol of Norman gastronomy once a year, with the Andouille Fair. Andouille is a highly prized type of sausage made from chitterlings.

With a post-war architecture, the town suffered greatly during the Second World War. Despite that, very beautiful elements are still present, such as the “Porte Horloge”, the door to the town of the 13th century, surmounted by a belfry from the 15th century, and the Dungeon, a relic from the feudal castle of the 12th century, which was razed to the ground on Richelieu’s order.

Outside the town you can enjoy the scenery of the Bocage : fields surrounded by hedges, orchards, and areas of granite to the south. If you follow the river Vire, to the north you can discover deep landscapes, steep cliffs…

Stop at the “Viaduc de la Souleuvre” and perhaps you will be tempted by the bungee jump ?

For nautical activities and peaceful walks, be sure to go to Lake Dathée, with its golf course, situated to the south of Vire.

Finally, take a walk in the woods at Saint-Sever … and search for mushrooms at the beginning of autumn.
